Monster Chinook salmon found in California

advertisement

A fifty-one inch long Chinook salmon, found dead during a salmon survey in Battle Creek by the Department of Fish and Game (DFG), is probably a record for the state of California say Department biologists.

"I have counted tens of thousands of salmon during my career and this is the biggest I have ever seen," said Doug Killam DFG Associate Fisheries Biologist. "When alive, it could have weighed more than the largest Chinook officially recorded in California, an 88-pound fish caught in the Sacramento River." Usually, the salmon weigh between 20 and 30 pounds.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Salmon die after they spawn. They go out to the ocean when they're juveniles, and return to the rivers and creeks where they were born to spawn and then they die.

Chinook salmon (like many other salmon species) die after spawning.

All Pacific salmon die after spawning. While most Atlantic salmon die after their first spawn, about 5-10% (mostly female) return to the sea to feed between spawnings.

HOLY SALMONIOD BATMAN!

That fellow's a monster. As the story also quotes, I too hope he passed along some of those genes before he died. He would have been quite a beautiful sight downriver or out to sea, in his prime and in those full brillant colors.

My nephew's Vegan girlfriend would not approve of what else I'm thinking....but it has to do with smoke, massive amounts of toasted bagels, cream cheese and capers.

Thanks for another interesting fish story Aine!

Yup, we grow big out here. Most of the time it takes a semi just to haul'em around.
