The first project slated is to take part in Blog Action Day 2008 : Poverty. Further information about this project and instructions about how you may participate in coordination with other Viners can be found in the Newsvine Assignment Desk's Group Talk module (which you can only see if you join the group).
Prior to October 15, seeds for reference materials should not be posted to this Group. Instead, simply use the tag "poverty" on your seeds. No articles should be posted to this group prior to the due date: October 15, 2008.
After this first project, we'll have a better idea of what works and what doesn't and refine things from there. Basically, I would like to follow up with similar projects on other topics... I'm thinking this could be a way to encourage more in-depth coverage or longer form journalism on a variety of topics. Even with this first project "Poverty", there is a wide expanse possible, depending on how each writer interprets the meaning of that... for example, those interested in Technology may choose to write about how mobile technology has helped to connect some third world countries to the rest of the world, overcoming the digital divide through innovative tech and web applications. That's just one example. Others may view it through social or political or personal lenses... the potential is there for a wide expanse of interpretations.
