advertisement

When I created the Newsvine Help Group, I remember saying something about occasionally posting an "open thread" type article to solicit questions from our community of Newsvine users to facilitate their getting the answers they need about using the site, its features, etc. Well, a month later, here it is... the first open thread.

If you have a question and can't seem to find the answer, feel free to drop it in the comments thread of this article. The floor is yours.

If you're having some sort of technical glitch and would like help solving it, PLEASE post what operating system (Windows version, Mac version, or Linux version) and what browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Flock, etc., along with its version number) you are using, along with a description of the symptoms you are experiencing. Thanks.

This article is ONLY posted to the Newsvine Help Group and the Newsvine Community Group, not to ALL of Newsvine. Oops, strike that, it looks like I have to publish to ALL of Newsvine if I want this to show up in the tag pages. But, I've not posted it under any main sections, if that helps any.

Hey Aine,

I would love to have an easy descriptive single page "how to" for inserting bold, italic, quote, link...into my articles correctly.....As I try and make these fuctions work you would be amazed at how poorly they turn out. If I'm going to spend the time writing an article it should be worth the time to make it look as good as possible.

A more obvious question, is pray tell why aren't the easy to use functions that are in comments, usuable as the same function in the writing section...

Thanks

Forest

There are a number of articles that may be of help with the HTML aspect of writing articles (and even seeding):

  • Richard G has posted HTML for Viners - Also see the comment thread there for additional info regarding how Newsvine uses a subset of XHTML, and a way to force the edit window to display a WYSIWYG editing function (which we're told is soon to be integrated into the site).
  • Corey Spring has posted Pimp My Newsvine - This goes into the intricacies of XHTML that is used at Newsvine.
  • Brian Ford has posted A Newsvine Primer - Also a helpful article about using XHTML at Newsvine.

If you're using firefox as your browser, there is an extension called Xinha Here! that may be of help; it gives you a WYSIWYG interface for any text area on a page that you might encounter. One of the reasons we don't currently have a WYSIWYG editor available in all text area interfaces is that the Newsvine developers feel that people need to have the impetus to learn how to do things on their own, and I would say that learning HTML and XHTML is one of those things that authors/columnists should learn to use, not only for the sake of their Newsvine column, but also for the sake of whatever content they create on the Web, whether it is on other sites, or in their own independent blogs.

A hint about what would be useful to learn in regards to your content at Newsvine can also be found just above the comment box where it says: (XHTML tags allowed - a, b, blockquote, br, code, dd, dl, dt, del, em, h2, h3, h4, i, ins, li, ol, p, pre, q, strong, ul). One of the best places on the Web to begin learning XHTML is at the W3 Schools web site.

My operating system is windows xp, my browser is firefox.

I don't know if anybody else has this problem, i maybe should contact the newsvine team but when i am uploading photos to an article some of them randomly disappear and delete themselves. It can get so annoying and eventually after uploading them loads of times they eventually stay.

Apparently there have been intermittent problems with the image upload feature.

One of the things I do is upload the image, then save the article, then re-edit, then when I save it the second time, the image I uploaded appears in the article. I'm using the same O/S and browser that you are.

I am running Camino and have the same problem. I thought there might be a size limit on how much you can upload as I can only post 1 pic per article and if I post more than one the last one is the only one that shows.

Aine, this is such a newbie question - I can't believe I'm actually asking it online! *blush* ...but how do you attach a photo to a seed or to an original post? Is there some XHTML code or other that I haven't yet run across? I'm using XP and IE7.

    Thanks for your help!

You can't attach a photo to a seed, only to an original article. There's a photo upload section near the bottom of the Write Article screen. It uses Flash to upload your image, and you won't see the image on your post until after you've Saved it.

      Heya,
just registered after being a casual visitor for a couple of months. So far, so good.

Although I can't seem to use the search box at the top of the page. After I hit the "Go"-button nothing happens, so I have to type the tag I'm looking for into the address in my browser ( for example). Any idea what's up with that?

      I'm using OS X with Safari 2.0.4.
      Thanks.

I'd send in a bug report on that (link is to the right at the top of the page, in the header). Tell them what's happening and your operating system and browser. It might be that newsvine is not entirely Safari-compatible (just guessing).

Okay - this is perhaps a dim question - or is maybe answered somewhere else (if that's the case, then just point me there!). What do the little branches on everyone's vine mean. I got one branch on the right, which I assume means simply that I am moderately active. But now I see I have a second one on the left, and can't figure out how I got it (I've been busy and out of the office, so haven't even been here much). Or are they randomly assigned? Or is there deep meaning in them? Or what?

That is Vineacity. If you see a little vine, just click on it for an explanation of what each branch represents. You can also look at the image with the explanation that appears in that pop-up window here.

And a little more explanation may be found in the Help documentation...

What Is 'Vineacity', and how do I improve mine?

"Vineacity" is a measure of one's overall level of contribution to Newsvine. Since users come in all forms and levels of interactivity, we've come up with a simple, yet powerful way to convey – at a glance – the relative productivity and credibility of Newsvine Users. By using Newsvine regularly and judiciously, your Vineacity should increase over time naturally.

You're welcome. The two votes I've given you on your comments also help towards your Vineacity. You should also vote on things here. Here's why:

What is "voting" and how do I do it?

One of the many ways Newsvine measures the "interestingness" of content is by keeping track of how many people vote for different articles, seeds, and comments around the site. If you see an article that is interesting or important to you, simply click the little grey upward-facing arrow with the number next to it in the "article toolbar". The article toolbar is the little horizontal box that appears with each article. Additionally, if you see a particularly insightful comment on an article, you can cast a vote for that as well. Votes help determine the placement of content around Newsvine as well as user reputations so vote with both your head and your heart.

Ok, I think the upload function uses Flash, so if you don't have Flash installed or you have some sort of Flash blocker extension or setting turned on, that could be why it's coming up blank.

It's because you're running Linux. Flash and Linux don't get along very well and Newsvine uses a flash app to resize your avatar image so you can crop it or whatever.

Try updating flash on your 'nix box and, if that doesn't work, pack up your avatar and upload it from a Windows PC with a recent version of Flash.

The seed just goes to the page containing the information. Your browser will often know exactly what to do with a .mpg file or a .wmv file so it will create its own player.

So yes, anyone can do it.

Okay, I'll give it a try. I also have a sort of policy question. I co-edit an online literary journal, not for profit, no ads, purely a labor of love. Is it okay to post seeds from work on that site? Not to excess, mind you.

            1. It is normal to vote for your own items. If the Newsvine developers didn't want us to do that, they wouldn't have made it possible for us to do that. There have been numerous threads and articles on this very topic, and the consensus among Newsviners is that it's okay.

Which is the preferred style for book, movies, etc- italics or quotes?

            2. When you Seed a link into Newsvine, if you highlight some of the text (up to a max of about 3 paragraphs) before you click the 'Seed Newsvine' button, the popup window will automagically fill with your text already blockquoted for you (like the quote above).

In your original writings, it's best not to use italics for your regular text, although you're certainly free to style text in any way you like within the constraints of the XHTML tags that are available for use at Newsvine (XHTML tags allowed - a, b, blockquote, br, code, dd, dl, dt, del, em, h2, h3, h4, i, ins, li, ol, p, pre, q, strong, ul).

I'm just suggesting you use normal text for your regular writing to be considerate towards those people who may have readability / vision handicaps.

Book titles should be underlined. Movie titles etc should be in quotes. That said, no one ever does that. Newsvine isn't a scholarly publication and we're pretty informal here.

Text styles aside, the most useful thing you can do is link to Amazon for the book or IMDB for a movie.

            Hi there!

I have posted a poll for my article on adult breastfeeding - but the poll does not see to appear when I search for the article and go to read it. The article is there but no poll.

Is this because there have not been any comments on the article?

I'm sure I've clicked all the right buttons....

            Thanks, good column.

I went to your column and I see this is your first article/seed at Newsvine. You're probably still in the Greenhouse, and there are some restrictions of features for "new" Newsviners which go away after you've been here for a while and posted more content, comments, made some friends, joined some Groups, and done some voting. The restrictions are there as an anti-spammer measure.

Thanks for letting me know, Aine.

I wish Newsvine would explain such things as their FAQ is very unsatisfactory. I also sent them a message on here asking the same question I asked you - but no reply.

Thanks for your explanation and help,

            Iain

            Me again!

I do not have any option to attach a photo to the piece I am writing. Is this because I am still considered "new" to the site?

I did click on the link which is meant to explain T's & C's for new users but the page is not working - error message.

I do feel the usability of Newsvine is unclear and unhelpful. The help team do not appear to respond to emails either (well, in my case...anyways)

I am sure these issues drive users to create their own blog etc instead (which is what I'll end up doing)

            Thanks,

            Iain

It's possible your "new" status isn't giving you the image attachment option. Or that option was broken when you tried. Or that you overlooked the attachment option that is down near the bottom of the Edit Article page (no attaching images to Seeds, only Articles).

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I haven't been here much lately and have opted to contribute content to my own blog for now.

Aine----I've been here 5 months, and requested Newsvine Help Group about 3 months ago. I was probably mistaken, but thought that was the purpose of the group. Maybe it's these open threads instead. Any progress on our Pending status, or is the group full? If so, could you just delete mine for me? Thanx.

Maybe it's because it's been so long. I am unable to remove or alter it. Can I take advantage of your expertise, even if I'm not a member, in learning how to remove that from my page?

If the request for group membership is no longer in the Pending Requests part of the admin console for the group, I can't approve or reject it. All you can do is contact Newsvine and report it as a bug (see the upper right corner of any page where it says Report Bug in the little black box up there). This isn't something either you or I can fix, as far as I know.

No pending members in the group.

Thank you for your recommendation to use Report A Bug. I was able to get the problem solved there. However, there are others in need of same help. You may want to contact Michael Murray for details. His message to me after he fixed it:

The group owner was mistaken... there are plenty of pending memberships for help.newsvine.com and yours is one of them.
I just rejected it for you.

Well, I wasn't mistaken because when I went there on 10 Feb, there were no pending requests.

However, I just came from there and approved a whole slew of requests that were sitting there tonight... so, I don't know if it was a database or a display issue, but I can assure you that on the 10th, there were no pending requests being displayed on my screen in the Help group.

All pending requests there tonight have been approved.

Aine----Good. The screen issue is between you and staff. I brought it up to problem solve for those behind me, and those future requests as well. My request has been cxld, and all others processed. Your computer clog-up has been fixed. Next?

(all that and not even any votes up. it's a learning experience here to locate support.)

I don't get paid to offer support... this is voluntary on my part. More than once the suggestion has been made to hire me for this, and not by me but by other users. Newsvine isn't set up to allow telecommuting, though, so that puts a damper on the prospect of me working here for pay.

I stopped voting when I noticed I wasn't getting votes (and no, I don't mean just in this thread). I've voted here now.

For some reason, my "reply box" double spaces everything when I hit the "enter" key. I'm thinking it's something relatively simple to fix? Vista/IE8

If you're using Easy Mode in the comment box, a carriage return is seen as a new paragraph, and that's why it looks double-spaced. You can switch to use XHTML Mode instead, which should bring back the single-spacing.

You'll find the switch for both modes just above where you type text into the box, in bold-faced type.
