A spate of phony 'terror' plots

Sometimes a "terrorism" prosecution is anything but -- just take a look at two recent federal prosecutions, one alleging a plot to bomb New York City's Holland Tunnel, the other a conspiracy to take down Chicago's Sears Tower.

This is a terribly important story. Much of this information was not made clear in the news reports surrounding the arrests. In a less hysterical climate there would be condemnation of such aggressive tactics - although the FBI has been involved as an agent-provocateur for years in other situations it has at least taken things further before making arrests.
It will be interesting to see how the courts react to prosecutions which amount to a couple of guys in a pub saying "yeah we should blow that building up." In today's world they could get the death sentence.

Tonight I was actively seeking out little-known independent media to seed, and came across a few good feeds. This article came from one of those.
I'm looking forward to what else my new feeds are going to spawn. Should be interesting. :)

Good find. I'm dismayed that the MSM isn't following up on these two stories, and that all voters are going to remember is "Bush stopped the Sears Tower from getting blown up."

Why rely on the MSM to cover things like this? This isn't an attack on you, btw... I'm saying we (all of us here) should be pushing these kinds of stories to the top of the Vine. I already know that the blogosphere can pressure MSM to cover things they'd normally sweep under the carpet. We can do the same thing here.
I'm hoping that if we push enough, eventually Google News or some MSM outlet might start paying some attention. Maybe I'm delusional, but I think it's worthwhile to try to do.

Oh I agree. Yay, individual media - Boo, mainstream media and all that stuff.
But, my grandmother doesn't read blogs. An overwhelmingly large number of people just watch the 19 minutes a night of Brian Williams and call it good enough. Unfortunately, a lot of these people vote too.
You cause is worthy, and I support it wholeheartedly - which is one reason why I love citizen media so much. I guess I'm just lamenting the fact that we can't rely on the MSM to do their jobs properly and stick with a story more than 24 hours.
Its silly actually. If you watch CNN or Fox for more than an hour, you get the same top 10 news stories repeated at you. Why can't they spend the time to either lengthen the stories out - or add more in-depth stories - including coming back around to stories just like this one?
Is it a lack of money? Lack of staff? They don't care? Don't think the American public will buy it?

As far as I'm concerned, if you are only talking about committing a crime and haven't done anything towards it, the police should just talk about arresting you and not do anything towards it. It is only fair.

The first part of what you wrote here is what actually got me to start reading news online... I couldn't stand the idea that there was only ten things going on in the world at any time and these had to be recycled at every news hour. I knew there had to be more going on than that, and I was curious about what wasn't being covered... and why. I wish more people were curious like that, and I'm not sure how to encourage that curiosity.
Can't be lack of money or staff... they seem to have both (unlike independent and citizen media). I don't know whether they care or not, but my hypothesis tends to go along the lines of thinking they don't have to do actual reporting of news... it's just entertainment to them and a way to sell a product to advertisers and to the public. Nobody is withholding their paychecks for them not doing the actual job of journalism. (This kind of goes along with what Jon Stewart was trying to tell the hosts of Crossfire before that show was pulled off the air.)

If these new cases have any merit, it argues against the notion that the Iraq war would make us more secure. Politics is fickle beast.

Nope, but wikipedia provides a pretty good overview.
A number of articles on the anthrax case have appeared in The Hartford Courant, many written by Dave Altimari and Jack Dolan. In their reporting they found incidents of mismanagement, racism, and missing pathogens at the Army's biodefense lab at Fort Detrick, Maryland.

And yes, I agree with you that IF the anthrax attacks were concocted by al-Qaeda connected terrorists, the "we haven't been attacked since 9-11" theory is shredded.

I used to actually live about a half mile from Fort Dietrick, and drove past it every day to take my son to school. I remember when they decided to drain the lake when they thought that perhaps the guy had used an underwater "bubble" to put the anthrax into an envelope. Of course, they found zip.
You hear about Dietrick and you think about those high tech labs where everyone's walking around in vacuum suits. Boy, looking at it from the outside you'd have never guessed that the base housed one of the highest rated labs in the country.
I can't believe I lived that close to it... glad I moved.

It's amazing just how well the spin machine works for the Bush administration. Throw a bunch of foreign kids into jail for a 'plot' to blow up the Chucky Cheese in Butte, Montana and in the blink of an eye the administration is all over this terrorism thing. It's about time that Bush take a vacation from all of the hard work and mend some fences on his ranch. The next thing you know they'll be trying to pin Kennedy assassination on President Clinton as some sort of precursor to all out war with Madagascar... and people will believe it!
